History

Each Mayan site play a significant role in their mysterious past. Altun Ha, located in Belize District is just one of many. Altun Ha the modern name was given to a nearby village of Rock stone pond. The site has over 5 miles with the central area containing remains of over 500 structures.

The largest being the “Temple of the Masonry Altars” which is 54 ft high. This site was first settled in 250 BC, with construction beginning around 100 AD to 900 AD.

It may have had a population of 10,000 and was a significant trading centre. Altun Ha is made up of two Plazas, Plaza A and Masonry Altars. Plaza A is the site of a mysterious Tomb “Green Tomb”. This is where many jade jewelry were discovered. The second Plaza, the Masonry Altar was thought to have been used for community religious activities. The ruins of the ancient structures had their stones reused for residential construction of the agricultural village of Rock-stone Pond in modern times, but the ancient site did not come to the attention of archaeologists until 1963.
